a waking trance state brought about by the smoking of opium or, by extension, a drowsy, restless sleep resulting from opium or heroin withdrawal. An expres-sion from the 1950s jargon of drug abusers. The Chinese word yen, mean-ing smoke or opium, is also the source of the English word for a yearning.
